Abstract

Purpose – This study examined the associations of self-control and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) with internet addiction among vocational high school students who actively use TikTok. Specifically, it investigated the relative contributions of these psychological factors to understanding problematic internet use among adolescents.
Methods – A quantitative correlational design was employed, involving 140 eleventh-grade students at SMK Negeri 10 Semarang, Indonesia. Data were collected using validated self-control, FoMO, and Internet Addiction Test (IAT) scales. Multiple linear regression was conducted to examine the individual and simultaneous associations of self-control and FoMO with internet addiction.
Findings – Self-control demonstrated a significant negative association with internet addiction (B = ?0.721; ? = ?0.506; p < 0.001), indicating that students with higher self-control tended to report lower levels of internet addiction. Conversely, FoMO was not a significant predictor after accounting for self-control (B = ?0.206; ? = ?0.131; p = 0.194). The overall regression model was statistically significant F (2, 137) = 40.475; p < 0.001, explaining 37.1% of the variance in internet addiction (R² = 0.371). These findings highlight self-control as a more substantial correlate of internet addiction than FoMO within the examined model.
Research Implications – The findings underscore the relevance of strengthening self-regulation and digital literacy within school counseling programs to address problematic internet use. The nonsignificant contribution of FoMO suggests that its association with internet addiction warrants further investigation. Given the cross-sectional design and single-school sample, the findings should be interpreted as statistical associations rather than causal relationships.
